Learning from No Kings 4.

On Saturday, October 17, No Kings Day #4 took place across the US. In contrast to the previous No Kings Days of Action, this one was designed to encourage early voting in the midterm elections. Here’s a map of early voting across the US (fun fact: early voting for this election has not yet started in many states–including mine):

Before No Kings Day 4 had even gotten underway, the organizers had already posted the following announcement asking participants to pledge to mobilize if the upcoming election or its results come under attack:

“No Kings: Vote Early on October 17 was a powerful start, but there’s more work to do. We must ensure that every valid vote is counted, certified, and protected. The No Kings movement stands ready to mobilize in response to attacks on our elections. By signing the No Kings pledge, you commit to be part of the solution, ready to join mass nonviolent action in rapid response to election disruption and subversion if needed.“

While signing folks up for such a rapid response may seem premature and drastic, there is a lot of evidence that signing people up to be at-the-ready and training them to mobilize safely is exactly what the No Kings Coalition should be doing right now.

Just this week, Axios (which is not known for taking radical or extreme positions) posted a piece about how MAGA ‘election activists’ were encouraging the President ‘to resort to extraordinary measures — including martial law — if they believe the midterm elections are “rigged.”‘

This account comes on top of the recent efforts by the Trump Administration to build a case to strip Representative Ilhan Omar of her citizenship. Unfortunately, these are just two examples in a growing dossier of evidence that there are forces at work within our government aiming to tamper with our democracy and the elections that will take place in two weeks.
