Learning About the Growing Threat of Political Violence from the People’s March

Today, I published a piece at the Brookings Institution summarizing some of the findings from our research at the 2025 People’s March in Washington, DC, which took place the Saturday before the Inauguration of Donald Trump.

The piece highlights how participants at the People’s March were very similar to those participants at the first Women’s March in 2017: they were predominantly female, highly educated, and White.

In addition to the usual questions that I’ve asked participants at numerous protests since the first Women’s March, we also asked everyone about their perspectives on political violence. The results are chilling: in contrast to earlier waves of the same question, rates of support for political violence have gone up substantially among left-leaning individuals.

These results are even more alarming when we remember that the data were collected Before Trump was inaugurated and proceeded to pardon all participants in the January 6th insurrection and then to pause all federal grants, which has caused substantial tensions across the country.
